Creative Collective

Avondale Colleges annual exhibition of Visual Communication and Visual Arts Degree students are currently working towards the exhibtion night, which will be held on Wednesday 14th November.

We have spent endless hours, days and nights working towards our final pieces. I think we are all looking forward to the opening of the night and being able to see our works all finished and displayed in the gallery. The exhibition will showcase a broad range of fresh new art to family, friends, fellow students, and industry representatives.

I urge you to come and explore our collection of works.

Inspirational Poster Design

Written by Peck Flamenco

I have been looking at a lot of poster design recently. I would like to share some of my favourite ones, that I have come across. They are not in any order of preference. I like them all for different reasons.

I love the color pallet of this poster. The way that the sky blends from light to dark. I like that it is a vector poster as I have a "thing" for vector. I also really like the position of the type. It's small but effective.

This poster speaks for itself. I love that the type is made out of what it is saying. I like how the "The" is not complete, since the birds that make it up, are flying away. It's such a cool concept. I also like the way the birds stand out from the red background.

I like the combination of minimal type, shapes and photo. It's simple but it grabs a lot of attention. Well at least it grabbed mine!

This poster is cool. I love the blue combined with the red lips. It's just amazing. I love the use of the real tongues, lips and teeth. I love how the page is ripped to see the type behind. I think this has to be one the best poster I have ever seen. It's a great inspiration.

Cafeteria Branding Digital Process

Written by Kaleb Carrasco

For our client, Avondale's The Caf, we were to create and design a branding solution that will be launched next year. I am showing here the digital thumbnails and process of logo formation for my presented solution: Pointon Place Cafeteria.

My conceptual approach was comprised of circular movements and progressions from one point to another; just like the movement of the cafeteria line, I also wanted to portray the growth at Avondale College an on-campus student experiences. The Caf is where residential students eat three times a day for their duration on campus, and for many it is their 'dining table' for a few years. The circles also represent dinner plates, and the two individual circles represent the Buffet and the Cafe that make up the Cafeteria.

Here is the final design of the logo and business card

Desert Showdown

Client: College Church

Designer: Jordan Tyler Lee

One ongoing commitment at That Design is a weekly poster for College Church. Given a title and theme, we create a new poster each week for the upcoming service. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's not.

This week, the title was Desert Showdown. The topic was based on a story in the Bible where Jesus is tempted by Satan in the Judean Desert, billed as a gritty showdown between good and evil. The design solution for this poster was very tactile, in order to capture that desert feeling through real imagery, combined with a striking, hostile title.

The process for this was a bit of fun and involved typesetting, printing, cutting out letters, placing title, covering with sand, removing lettering, photographing, editing, and finally laying it out in InDesign.

It's all about PINTEREST!!!

Written by Briana Williams

Lately, we have been using a site called Pinterest to use as a virtual mood board between us. Pinterest lets you organize and share all the amazing things you find on the web and ʻPINʼ them for use at another time. People create boards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and like us create boards of inspiration for the projects we are currently working on.

One of the great things about Pinterest is you can browse boards created by other people and search friends from other social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Its a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share similar interests to you.
Pinterest also makes it really easy when browsing other boards, sorting out 33 different categories to search from! Which makes it really quick and simple to search exactly what you are looking for. People are generally Pinning every day, so there is always great new things to check out. I try and make it a daily habit to spend at least 20 minutes a day searching Pinterest for new ideas and inspiration. I am always finding great new things to Pin. If you get a chance you should follow the link and see what all the hype is about!!! Happy Pinning.

The Baton

Client: College Church

Designer: Jordan Tyler Lee

One ongoing commitment at That Design is a weekly poster for College Church. Given a title and theme, we create a new poster each week for the upcoming service. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's not.

This week, the title was Don't Drop The Baton. The bold title really gave way for bold typography and colour story, and in light of the title were very London 2012 inspired. The slightly abstract imagery of a falling baton in the background is compounded by the title which drops down partially hidden, alluding to that same falling motion.

Great Design

Written By: Briana Williams

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things bought together”.
In our studio we come together to produce things which are just right for you and your business. The above quote is one which I came across many years ago. I can't quite remember who it was by, but it is something which inspired me to work on my time management. I believe that great design takes time, not just an all nighter the night before something is due to be pitched.

With the use of many design elements, we collate ideas to produce a design which is suited to the task at hand. It takes many long hours in the studio and also spent in our spare time outside of class. Great design is not just one element, it is a series of things bought together to create something amazing! I strive to create something that is GREAT and ultimately something which is just right for you and your business. Something great doesn't just happen over night it takes many long hours of work to produce something which is seen as great design. On that note, what is great design? And who is it that determines what great design is? Have a think about it and let us know what you believe great design to be! We love to get feedback on your own personal thoughts. On another note, if anyone knows who the above quote is by please let me know.
